Start Your Garden

Everything you need to grow something beautiful, from a Southern California garden.

There’s nothing like walking out your back door and gathering dinner, or a fresh bouquet, from a garden you’ve poured your love into. Here you’ll find the basic information, resources, and tools you need to start growing a garden of your own.

What you'll need to get started

A Sunny Spot

Aim for about six hours of sun (eight is great, too!). A corner of the yard, a patio, or a few pots on the porch—it all counts.

GOOD Soil

Invest in quality soil and compost from the start. Healthy soil gives your garden the best foundation to grow.

Tools

A trowel, gloves, and a good pair of pruners will take you pretty far. You really don’t need much to get started.

Water

A hose, watering can, or simple drip line — whatever makes it easy to water consistently.

Something to Grow

Start with a packet of seeds or a couple of nursery starts. Pick something you’re excited to grow.
